VMware のサイトから VMware Server の 2.0.2 tar.gz パッケージをダウンロードする。

Ubuntu 用のインストールスクリプトをダウンロードする。

インストールスクリプトを解凍し、スクリプトと同じディレクトリに VMware Server の圧縮ファイルを置く。

$ ls
LICENSE                  vmware-server-2.0.2-203138-update.patch
README                   VMware-server-2.0.2-203138.x86_64.tar.gz
start-VMware-console.sh  vmware-server-2.0.x-kernel-2.6.3x-install.sh
vmware-config.patch

スクリプトファイルと VMware Server の圧縮ファイルが置かれているディレクトリまでのパスに空白が含まれると正しく実行できないので注意する。

$ sudo ./vmware-server-2.0.x-kernel-2.6.3x-install.sh

スクリプトを実行すると warning メッセージが大量に出力だれるが、スクリプトが終了してしまわない限り大丈夫。
